PAS 2161 compliant data collection and quality management

To ensure standard compliance, RoadAI’s PAS 2161-specific data validity filtering applies strict quality control for videos. RoadAI monitors video quality at a 10 m resolution and disqualifies data if the quality does not meet the set criteria.

Data validity filtering applies only to reports. PAS 2161-based road condition data viewable on RoadAI Web as a data overlay is not subject to data validity filtering.

To maximize valid data coverage and minimize the amount of data discarded by data validity filtering, follow the instructions in Recommendations for best surveying results and these guidelines:

  • Do not collect video when roads are wet or clearly damp.

RoadAI will not consider wet or damp road sections as valid for PAS 2161 analysis.

  • Refer slightly overcast weather to avoid shadows, especially in wooded areas.

RoadAI will disqualify sections with high-contrast “camouflage” shadow patterns.

  • Lower the driving speed in heavily wooded sections, where treetops block light from the road surface.

RoadAI will automatically detect motion blur due to low light conditions and set the data as invalid.

  • Refer to Installing phone in vehicle for optimal camera position and use of the reflection filter.
In some cases, a back cloth on the dashboard is a good alternative to the reflection filter, as it prevents reflections without affecting camera performance in low light conditions.
  • Use only RoadAI-recommended phone models.
RoadAI produces category calculations as a combined value for multi-lane and bi-directional roads. There is no need to drive the roads with one centerline in both directions.
