Interpreting line marking data

RoadAI can detect line markings and assess their condition based on the visibility of the markings, just like in conventional visual line marking surveys.

Figure 1. Visual examples of line marking condition

The line marking automated condition assessment is designed for assessing the condition of line markings of roads with one lane per direction. RoadAI can detect and rate the condition of five individual lines, and the results are used to calculate an average condition score of all detected lines. RoadAI also calculates an average condition score of detected lines in the middle of the road, up to three lines, corresponding to the lines 2, 3 and 4 in the following figure.

When surveying roads with more than one lane per direction or if there are occasionally multiple lanes like at intersections, RoadAI analyzes the road visible in the frame as a two-lane road, analyzing up to five individual visible lines.

The analyzed lines around the driven lane depend on the handedness of the traffic:

  • Right-handed traffic: the lines around the lane on the left are assessed
  • Left-handed traffic: the lines around the lane on the right are analyzed
